The Limited Renewable Energy JATC offers a 2-year apprenticeship program that combines both on the job and related classroom training. Oregon-Columbia Chapter NECA and IBEW Local 48 sponsor this program.

If accepted into the apprentice program you will work for an electrical contractor for a minimum of 4000 OJT hours; there is no guarantee of 40 hours per week. You will complete a minimum of 4 terms of school; classes currently meet at the NECA-IBEW Electrical Training Center.
Costs for the program include books and tools (approximately $617 for basic skills class and $385 for first year and later years). Costs are the responsibility of the apprentice. (Receipt for payment will be provided for apprentice to seek assistance through Workforce Systems Inc.).
A general description of work performed on the job includes the following categories:

Installations of renewable energy systems, including wire pulling and splices, conduit, flex, tray and duct, control panels & controls, wiring devices, removal and finish work

Photovoltaic systems and other renewable energy systems including wind, solar, micro-hydroelectricity, fuel cells, & engine generators for off-grid systems

Balance of systems, including but not limited to installation, removal and finish of inverters, batteries, regulation, metering, conditioning equipment and systems

Other, including NEC requirements, system design, troubleshooting, maintenance and plan/blueprint reading
Apprentice wages are based on a percentage of the prevailing Limited Renewable Energy Technician rate ($21.12 per hour effective 1-2-2012) in addition to benefits.

Apprentices are advanced to the next period only when all advancement requirements have been met. Upon completion of all program requirements apprentices are referred to take the Limited Renewable Energy Technician (LRT) Journeyman exam.
Geographical area covered: Clatsop, Clackamas, Columbia, Hood River, Multnomah, Sherman, Tillamook, Wasco, Washington Counties, Yamhill County North of section line T4S, State of Oregon.
